The Mercedes-Benz OM621 four cylinder diesel engine was first introduced in 1958 with a cubic capacity of 1897cm3 with a then revolutionary overhead cam design fitted to the 190D Mercedes sedan. The first version of this engine producing 50 HP at 4,000 rpm.

The following years saw modifications to bore size and output. The 180Dc was fitted with version IV and boasted 48 HP at 3,800 rpm and a cubic capacity of 1988cm3. This was followed by the 190Dc in 1961 with the engine providing 55 HP at 4,300 rpm.

1965 saw the birth of the 200D with version VIII of the engine which now incorporated a 5 bearing crankshaft to reduce engine vibration and noise. 55 HP was achieved at 4,200 rpm.

As the forefather of the OM615, the OM621 was also fitted to the Unimog 421 until replaced in 1968 to coincide with the introduction of the 200D/8 and 220D/8 sedans.
