The Mercedes-Benz M180 six cylinder petrol engine with a cubic capacity of 2196 cm³ and overhead cam design was originally fitted to the 219/220 S/SE, 220Sb/SEb and 230/230S Mercedes sedans during the 1950s and 60s.

A detuned version with a lower compression ratio also found application in the Mercedes-Benz Unimog-S 404 cross-country truck that is still used by many military forces and civilian enthusiasts throughout the world.
